Hershey Frame Shop has been in business since 1998, operated by Ross Rulli. His son, Caleb, spent seven years working and learning the business before taking it over as sole proprietor in 2007. The shop was named after artist Samuel Hershey, Caleb’s grandfather. Hershey studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and moved to Rockport in the 1930s, where he studied under Lester Stevens, Aldo T. Hibbard and ran the Sandy Bay Art School with another prominent Rockport artist, Stanley Woodward. Hershey made good use of the WPA era, painting murals in public buildings in Rockport and beyond. In 1947 Hershey took over the position of president for the Rockport Art Association, which he occupied for four years. After World War II, he taught painting and design at the Rhode Island School of Design until his retirement. Today, the picture framing business embodies the knowledge of three generations. Caleb Rulli continues to expand in new directions and has worked with the Cape Ann Museum and the Manchester Library on projects. Rulli is sought after by local artists and photographers, who know that this framer is the best choice to protect and preserve their hard work for posterity. Cape Ann is also home to many summer residents who need the convenience of local services. Many artists also come to take local classes and Hershey Frame shop has a growing relationship with this segment.
